魂の目覚め

Tamashii no Mezame

(Awakening of the Soul)

A karate and stage-art performance in which traditional kata techniques merge with music, movement and contemporary artistic interpretation.

What is kata?

Kata is a predetermined sequence of karate techniques that simulates combat against imagined opponents. It brings together stances, blocks, strikes, movement, breathing and concentration, which means every technique must be performed precisely, powerfully and under full control.

Children begin learning kata from their very first belts. It is an essential part of grading exams, and athletes also compete individually and in teams in kata events. In Kyokushin karate, kata is just as important and inseparable a part of the martial art as kumite – full-contact sparring against an opponent.

Concept of the performance

On stage, the karatekas' frozen bodies resemble sleeping statues. As the music plays, each one awakens in their own time – as if different parts of a person's inner world were coming to life. The karate kata section becomes not merely a fight against a shadow, but a dance.

At the heart of the performance, a bond between an adult and a child emerges, reminding us that we all carry earlier versions of ourselves within us. They never disappear – sometimes they fall asleep, sometimes they speak up, and sometimes they become a force that helps us move forward.

As feminine and masculine energy, gentleness and strength, stillness and movement come together, kata becomes not only a traditional karate form but also a language for a person's inner journey. It is a story about the moment when something that has been silent for a long time awakens.
