Rūta Žinienė – Sashiko
Japanese sashiko stitching – create geometric patterns on fabric with practitioner Rūta Žinienė.
Sashiko (Jp. 刺し子, "little stitches") is a traditional Japanese stitching technique that arose during the Edo period. It was developed by farmers and fishermen, who stitched together several layers of cotton to make clothing sturdier and warmer. Today these small stitches, resembling grains of rice, are used to decorate both traditional and contemporary textile pieces.
During the workshop you will get to know the aesthetics and history of sashiko and its main types (hitomesashi, moyosashi, kugurisashi, koginsashi), and try stitching on fabric hands-on. The session suits both beginners and craft enthusiasts – what matters most is not perfection, but intention, the creative process, and the time spent together.
