Sumi-e (Jp. 墨絵, "ink and picture") is monochrome painting on rice paper in soft, water-diluted tones. The technique arose in China two thousand years ago and later travelled to Japan. The main tools – known as the "Four Treasures" – are the brush (fude), the ink stick (sumi), handmade paper (washi) and the vessel for grinding ink (suzuri).

During the workshop you will get to know the principles and tools of sumi-e and try the technique hands-on on special rice paper and fans, painting a horse and a pine tree – symbols of 2026, the Year of the Fire Horse.

The session is led by Marija Šimanskaitė – long interested in Eastern culture, Japanese sumi-e painting and calligraphy, and co-founder of the private Japanese culture house and Japanese garden Sei Shin En in Vilnius.
