Ieva Šimanskaitė – Calligraphy
Traditional Japanese shodō calligraphy for children aged 9 to 16 – create your own calligraphy piece with Hikari studio founder Ieva Šimanskaitė.
The workshop runs only on Saturday, September 5th, 12:00–13:00. It's for children aged 9 to 16 – family members are warmly welcome to watch nearby, but only children of this age take part in the workshop itself.
I'm Ieva Šimanskaitė – an art educator and founder of Hikari, a studio for traditional Japanese arts.
Japanese culture, aesthetics and traditional arts have fascinated me for many years. Delving into this artistic direction, I practise Japanese shodō calligraphy and sumi-e painting myself, and my long acquaintance with these arts led to founding the Hikari studio – a space where I can share what is close to my heart with children.
Driven by a love of art and my teaching experience, I organise creative workshops, children's exhibitions and creative camps where children can get to know Japanese artistic traditions and discover the joy of creating.
I believe Japanese arts give children far more than the development of artistic skills. The process of calligraphy and sumi-e painting builds patience, focus and a sense of aesthetics, and teaches them to listen to themselves and be present in the moment. It is a calm, creative process that helps children relax, build confidence and experience the joy of creating.
During the workshop, children will get to know traditional Japanese shodō calligraphy and the authentic tools of this art. They will discover the beauty of Japanese characters, choose a symbol or meaning close to their heart, and create their own calligraphy piece.
This workshop is an opportunity to get to know another culture through art, try traditional Japanese art tools, and experience a slow process full of focus and creative discovery.
